Thanks to everyone who attended our two-part training on cost-benefit analysis and justice policy. More than 40 participants from roughly 23 states and the Northern Mariana Islands participated in the live webinars on January 18 and 25, 2011. The recorded webinars, PowerPoint slides, and handouts are now available.
Special thanks to our guest instructor, Michael Wilson of the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission, for sharing his expertise on this topic. Michael is an award-winning economist and director of Oregon’s Statistical Analysis Center.
The first part of the training provides a detailed overview of CBA in criminal justice, explaining the economics of incarceration; discussing cost estimates, probabilities of criminal-justice resource use, and sentencing distributions; and defining effect sizes.
The second part of the training gets even more hands-on, with an exercise that estimates the costs of crime and a review of a cost-benefit analysis. It also discusses how to use CBA in decision making.
This two-part training is ideally suited for staff at sentencing commissions, statistical analysis centers, government budget offices, and research organizations.
Please let us know if you have questions or feedback about this training.
